PERSONAL INFORMATION: Bjarni Tryggvason was born September 21,1945. He was born in Reykjavik,Iceland. He is married and has two children. He is an Airline Transport pilot with more than 4000 hours of flight exercises and 1800 hours as a flight instructor. He is active in aerobatic flight. He enjoys general fitness, jogging, and skiing.

EDUCATION: Bjarni Tryggvason went to high school in Richmond, British Columbia. He was a bachelor of applied engineering physics. He went to the university of British Columbia in 1972. He also went to the university of Western Ontario with specialization applied in mathematics and fluid dynamics.

ORGANIZATIONS: He is a member of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute.

SPECIAL HONOURS: He got a numerous amount of scholarships throughout his years of university. He got Honorary Doctorates from the University of Western Ontario in 1988 and another one from the university of Iceland in 2000. From Iceland he got an Order of the Falcon award and in 1997 he got a NASA Space Flight Medal.

EXPERIENCE: He was a meteorologist with the clouds physics group at the Meteorologic Service Canada in Toronto in 1972 and 1973. In 1979 he was a guest researcher associate at Kyoto University in Japan.

In 1980 he was a guest researcher associate at James Cook University of North Queensland in Townsville, Australia. At the University of Western Ontario from 1980 to 1982 he was a lecturer in Applied Mathematics.

Bjarni Tryggvason was selected as one of the original six Canadian astronauts in December 1983. He was trained as a backup astronaut for Steve McLean for the CANEX-2 set of experiments, which flew on mission STS-52 in October 1992. He was also the engineer for the Space Vision System Target Spacecraft project.

On August 1998 he was invited to take part in the NASA mission specialist training held at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

He continues as a technical consultant for the development of the Microgravity Vibration Isolation Subsystem. Following a period of training and evaluation
